How to Raise Children Who Care About Issues in the World

August 4, 2023 by Dr. Lori Gore-Green

In an ever-evolving, interconnected world, it is imperative for the upcoming generation to not only understand the complexities of global challenges but to also be proactive in addressing them. Raising children who care about the world’s issues requires conscious effort and thoughtful guidance.

Develop Awareness Through Education: Understanding starts with knowledge. Children should be exposed to various global issues such as poverty, climate change, human rights, and cultural diversity from an early age. This education doesn’t necessarily need to be formal but can be integrated into daily conversations, books, documentaries, and other resources. Encourage questions, discussions, and critical thinking to foster a deeper understanding.

Model Compassion and Empathy: As a parent or guardian, your actions serve as a model for your child’s behavior. Show empathy and compassion in your interactions with others. Discuss the feelings and perspectives of people who are different or live in different circumstances. When children observe these traits, they are more likely to mirror them and exhibit understanding and respect for others’ experiences.

Encourage Active Involvement: Advocacy begins with action. Allow children to participate in age-appropriate activities that aid in solving global issues. This could range from local community service projects to participating in awareness campaigns or fundraising for global causes. Involvement provides a sense of responsibility and offers a first-hand understanding of the impact of their actions.

Nurture Interconnectedness: Highlight the interdependence that exists in our world. Show your children how individual actions can have global impacts, using practical examples they can relate to. This might include explaining how recycling at home can help reduce global pollution or how buying fair-trade products supports farmers in developing countries.

Teach Respect for Diversity: Our world is beautifully diverse, and children need to appreciate this diversity. Encourage your children to learn about different cultures, traditions, languages, and lifestyles. This can foster an understanding of common humanity and a sense of global belonging.

Promote Critical Thinking: Encourage your children to think critically about global issues. Provide them with balanced information and let them form their own opinions. Foster an environment where they can express their thoughts, challenge norms, and propose innovative solutions.

Celebrate Positive Change: While it’s essential to expose children to the challenges our world faces, it’s equally important to focus on the positive changes and improvements. Share stories of individuals and communities that are successfully making a difference. This not only provides hope but also inspires them to contribute their part.

Cultivate a Global Mindset: Incorporate a global perspective in your child’s everyday life. This could involve learning a second language, exploring international cuisine, or having friends from diverse backgrounds. It’s about broadening their horizon and fostering a sense of curiosity about the world beyond their immediate environment.
